Have you kissed a girl?

Today in my class we grazed over the topic of Katy Perry's song "I kissed a girl". I'm sure you all have heard it by now. We spoke about audience theory, in which you study the public's reactions to certain events and gage what they are thinking. Some people believe that this song is acceptable to the mainstream audience because of her lyrics. For example she says "No, I don't even know your name, it doesn't matter. You’re my experimental game" what audiences could potentially take from this line is that she didn't set out to kiss a girl it just kind of happened. She isn't expecting a relationship to come from this one kiss, she even states "This was never the way I planned, not my intention. I got so brave, drink in hand, lost my discretion" relating the experience to a "drunken" escapade, not something she would do on a normal afternoon. The last thing that has a great impact on how this song is acceptable to the mainstream is the lyric "I kissed a girl just to try it, I hope my boyfriend don't mind it". She establishes her hetero status and now it even more evident that this was just an impromptu happening. I believe that this song would have eventually made it to mainstream on the simple fact that it is a taboo subject. Today's youth seems to be looking to push the envelope and to go around singing a song like this simply does that. It can be shocking, I remember the first time I heard the song, I wasn't quite sure how I felt. Now personally I am a fan, but I am also aware that not everyone enjoys it. I guess what I'm trying to say is that in a positive or a negative way this song was going to get attention and have many different reactions. The audience theory will defiantly vary from ethnic group to ethnic group but I think the over all message can be read as positive. If nothing else it has people opening up to the idea of bisexuality if not homosexuality. Let me know what you think! To watch video click here
